Time: 10 Minute Eggs

To play Corner View catch-up and in preparation for the weekend’s events, here is a review of how to hard boil eggs… just in case you’ve forgotten or, worse, over boiled them in the past:

  1. Carefully, place the eggs in the bottom of a sturdy-bottomed wide pan.
  2. Add cold water till it covers the eggs by at least an inch-and-a-half.
  3. Bring the water to a boil, uncovered on the stovetop (Big Person will do this part!)
  4. Once at a boil, cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Carefully drain the eggs in a colander and run cold water over them to cool them down.

Voila!  Perfectly hard boiled eggs that are ready to decorate or with which to make deviled eggs (super yum!) for Easter Brunch.

As we have been waiting for our own chick to hatch over here, my CV’s have been neglected.  Please check out these more timely views from around the world.

Sewing for la Mama: Mariposa Dress from HANDMADE BEGINNINGS

11 April 2011 Filed In: Crafts, sewing, tribeca, Uncategorized

This is my first pregnancy where the due dates falls while the weather still may or may not be warm.  It snowed in New York City last year in early May, and while that is slightly unusual, it was not exactly shocking to see snow flakes falling so late in the game.

With Mira and Liev, I had plenty of time to stretch my belly out into dresses and hot weather clothing.  Honestly, since I was still teaching yoga then, half my time was spent in yoga pants and tank tops.

This baby is cooking a bit earlier, so I have to step up my game.  My two pairs of maternity pants, and even the words “maternity pants” make me cringe at this point, are looking sad and overworked after the long, hard winter.  So, despite the grazillion other things that perhaps I should be doing at this point, I decided to whip up The Mariposa Dress from Anna Maria Horner‘s book HANDMADE BEGINNINGS: 24 Sewing Projects to Welcome Baby.  Because, sometimes this late in the game, la Mama just needs a beautiful dress to get her through the last days of a long winter and the waiting.  Well, that and some leopard print heels.

This Moment: Lunch in the East Village with Aunt Sheri

Hitching onto the Soule Train.  But with a few words since, well, there has been a lot of silence this week.

These past two weeks have been very quiet here, and I am sorry about the lack of posts.  My energy has been going to the last little stretch of growing our baby and taking care of all the emotions and all of the practical tasks of bringing a new son or daughter, a new brother or sister, into our family.  We are all incredibly excited about the baby, but we are also having some moments of anxiety over how it is going to be to have this new little person with us.  This mama has had to run a lot of damage control and give extra care and attention to the Big Sister and Big Brother.  Extra stories have to be read.  Extra snuggles and hugs need to be given, and extra time scheduled to let things fall apart a bit, too.

Thank Goodness for time with Aunt Sheri!  Being an auntie is really the best thing!  You just get to love and be loved without a lot of the drama involved in parenting a child.  It was a ray of sunshine on a very dark day to get to go up to the East Village with Liev and have lunch with my sister-in-law.

Have an amazing weekend, Yummies!

Sewing for Dudes: Oliver + S’s Little Explorer’s Vest

28 March 2011 Filed In: Crafts, sewing, Uncategorized

Seeing as it is near impossible to find cute little boys’ patterns, it was a total delight to open up Little Things to Sew by Oliver + S‘s Liesl Gibson and find this great vest with lots of pockets to stuff treasures and curiosities.

One thing that usually really works when choosing fabric to make things for boys is to peruse the Kokka home decor weight linens.  Even though it isn’t made for clothing, it works just fine for garments that have a bit of body to them, as boys’ clothing so often does.  The prints, like this robot print we chose for the Little Explorer’s Vest, are cute yet cool.  The colors tend to be a little bit more sophisticated than most of the fabrics I come across that are made for boys, but not at all boring.  Once you wash these linens a few time they soften up and feel good next to the skin.

Liev’s vest is lined with a narrow slate blue and white striped seer suckered cotton.  We couldn’t resist adding something that wasn’t included in the pattern in the book but definitely adds to the design: a small, secret inner robot pocket to put that extra treasure that you might not want everyone to know about.  Liev is obsessed with this little pocket and whispers things that he will be putting in it.

As for the large back pocket, we’re still working out what might live in there.  In time, without doubt, my little dude will figure something out.  For now, he is feeling good about finally, finally getting something sewn especially for him.
